This engraving depicts an elegant woman looking through a telescope, with a globe in her lap and another telescope at her feet. The signature—“A Paris Chez I. Mariette rue St. Iacques aux Colonnes d’Hercule”—refers to Jean Mariette (1660-1742), a noted engraver and printer in Paris whose shop was located under the sign of the Colonnes d’Hercule on rue St. Jacques.
